Start of big (inter)national smart mobility testing area

Autonomous cars, trucks that communicate with one another via WiFi and drive in platoons and traffic lights that communicate with approaching traffic. These are only a few concrete examples of technological developments that make traffic smoother, safer and more sustainable and that are succeeding one another with ever-increasing rapidity. On Monday, a new testing area was presented that will enable these innovations by facilitating the practical application of the various services and techniques: ‘MobilitymoveZ.NL, Urban Mobility Testing Area’. This is an initiative jointly set up by the province of North Brabant, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management and the municipalities of Eindhoven, Helmond and Tilburg.

SimSmartMobility: unique simulation platform

SimSmartMobility is a simulation platform developed by Connecting Mobility, the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). It connects data, systems and traffic models in order to simulate smart mobility solutions - extremely rapidly. Both TNO and Connecting Mobility are involved in the SmartwayZ.NL programme but SimSmartMobility was developed separately from SmartwayZ.NL.

Smart Mobility

Smart Mobility sees the traveller as the key player in a network of smart mobility systems: a consumer of smart technologies and services which provide optimum accessibility. Our ambition is to realise the smartest road network in Europe, a network which penetrates to the very centres of the cities in the south of the Netherlands. Smart Mobility is an independent project but it is reflected in the other seven sub-projects.

A58 Tilburg - Breda

The smartest solutions are being sought to increase accessibility between the Sint-Annabosch traffic junction and the Tilburg-West exit on the A58 Tilburg - Breda. The InnovA58 approach does not envisage the widening of this section. Market exploration provides the opportunity for the development of innovative alternatives instead of simply laying more asphalt.

A2 Bypass Eindhoven

There are frequent traffic jams where the A58 joins the A2 to the south of Batadorp traffic junction on the main carriageway of the A2 (the Eindhoven bypass). We are monitoring the flow and, if problems arise, a MIRT study will be started up.

A2 Weert - Eindhoven

Every working day, there are traffic jams between Weert and Eindhoven on the A2 and they are particularly bad in the direction of Eindhoven during the morning rush hour. Besides the daily users, of course, the municipalities and provinces located in the south of the Netherlands also suffer the negative consequences of tailbacks. Moreover, motorists have a tendency to take short cuts, which is not good for the liveability or traffic safety of the villages concerned.
