Test day at the Automotive Campus Helmond with driving assistant

HELMOND – SmartwayZ.NL teamed up with a dozen public and private parties, including the car manufacturer Ford, at the Automotive Campus in Helmond. The test was used to determine if, and how 'GLOSA' (green- and red-light in-car information services) can be used for driver assistance and comfort services. GLOSA could inform the driver well, in advance on approaching red lights. It could even advice driving speeds for smoothly passing through the green light. GLOSA could help road authorities to better manage the traffic, reduce emissions, increase safety and comfort.

The parties have each submitted an innovative mobility proposal. These letters of intent specify how they will spend a period of three months consulting with the authorities in order to further detail and develop their test proposals.

MobilitymoveZ.NL receives 44 registrations from interested market parties

The Dutch testing environment, MobilitymoveZ.NL, posted a request for registering interest on TenderNet and TED, platforms for (European) tenders, on 11 July 2017. MobilitymoveZ.NL’s ambition is – in cooperation with national and international market parties – to facilitate the testing of new, innovative mobility solutions. These must be ready to implement at a large scale within four years. This includes for example ‘level 4 autonomous driving’ in urban regions or on-demand services and electric vehicles. Since its posting, 44 parties have indicated their interest.

Start of big (inter)national smart mobility testing area

Autonomous cars, trucks that communicate with one another via WiFi and drive in platoons and traffic lights that communicate with approaching traffic. These are only a few concrete examples of technological developments that make traffic smoother, safer and more sustainable and that are succeeding one another with ever-increasing rapidity. On Monday, a new testing area was presented that will enable these innovations by facilitating the practical application of the various services and techniques: ‘MobilitymoveZ.NL, Urban Mobility Testing Area’. This is an initiative jointly set up by the province of North Brabant, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management and the municipalities of Eindhoven, Helmond and Tilburg.

'Design thinking, design doing'

Some of the SmartwayZ.NL sub-projects use ‘social design thinking’. But what is it? What is it used for? And, most important, what benefits does it yield? Julie Hornix of design agency VanBerlo explains how it works.

Featured projects

A67 Leenderheide - Zaarderheiken

The A67 is important for the accessibility of the south of the Netherlands and for goods traffic. It is a busy road which is particularly prone to hold-ups during the rush hour. Between 25 and 40 percent of the vehicles using this road are trucks carrying goods. The A67 road is also prone to accidents, and these cause severe delays. For that reason, we are looking for ways to improve the flow of traffic on the A67.

A58 Tilburg - Breda

In the A58 Tilburg-Breda project we are looking for the smartest solution to improve accessibility. Exploratory market studies suggest that besides physical capacity increases, smart mobility and mobility behaviour measures could also hold the key to success. The effects of introducing only smart mobility and mobility behaviour measures cannot at present be estimated properly, but it seems they would not be sufficient to resolve the traffic problems. Because of the lengthy planning and decision process, it is important to study the effect of alternatives to smart mobility measures such as increasing the road capacity.

Smart Mobility

Smart Mobility is an independent sub-project, but also comes back in the other seven sub-projects. Smart Mobility sees the traveller as the key player in a network of smart mobility systems: a consumer of smart technologies and services which provide optimum accessibility. Our ambition is to realise the smartest road network in Europe, a network which penetrates to the very centres of the cities in the south of the Netherlands. Smart Mobility is an independent project but it is reflected in the other seven sub-projects.

A2 Bypass Eindhoven

The National Market and Capacity Analysis (NMCA) of 2017 showed that after realization of the sub-projects InnovA58, N279 and the A67 a coherent road task arises for the Eindhoven A2 bypass in combination with the A58 and A50. SmartwayZ.NL's programme council decided on 27 September 2017 to initiate a problem analysis for the Bypass Eindhoven (A2 and N2) and the A50 Veghel-Eindhoven. But improving the access to the De Run industrial area in Veldhoven could not be delayed to await the results of this problem analysis. In keeping with the adaptive nature of SmartwayZ.NL, it was therefore decided to tackle the most urgent problems with smart programming - under the banner of the A2 Bypass Eindhoven project - that relies on putting short-term measures in place.
